Have a repair quote in hand?
Compare it to the line above, then ask the contractor for the part name and whether the diagnostic fee is credited. If you would rather have a second, independent licensed contractor look at it, request a match.
AC replacement cost in Reno
A like-for-like change-out of a standard-efficiency central system is the most common replacement. Heat pumps cost more up front and are covered on their own page because Reno's winters change the math. If you are weighing a roof cooler instead, see swamp cooler vs. central AC in Reno.
| Item | Typical range | Reno published price | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central AC replacement (standard efficiency) | $5,000 – $8,300/ unit | — | 2025-07-25 |
| Air-source heat pump, installed | $10,000 – $25,000/ unit | — | 2025-10-30 |

What a Reno replacement quote should include
- Equipment brand, model and capacity, and whether the indoor coil or air handler is replaced too.
- The permit, in the contractor's name. Inside Reno: $45 change-out fee plus $45 issuance. Unincorporated Washoe County charges per item ($20 for a compressor up to 3 hp, plus $45 issuance). Sparks requires a permit but does not publish its fee.
- Any NV Energy incentive the equipment qualifies for, as a line item: $250 to $475 on a 15.2–19.1 SEER2 central AC in 2026, more if income-qualified. Only contractors on NV Energy's approved list can apply it, and you cannot claim it yourself afterwards.
- Disposal of the old unit and refrigerant recovery.
- A deposit no larger than $1,000 or 10% of the contract, whichever is less (NRS 624.970).
- The contractor's NSCB license number. For a full replacement it should be a C-21 or C-21b license, not maintenance-only C-21d, which cannot replace a complete condenser or air handler (NAC 624.380).
Why Reno costs can sit above the national range
Reno is a two-season market: the same contractor who replaces an AC in July is replacing furnaces in January, and the 2024 Northern Nevada Code Amendments set the winter design temperature for Reno, Sparks and Washoe County at 17°F. Equipment is often sized and specified for both seasons, and heat pump quotes in particular depend on cold-weather performance. Elevation and summer demand also compress schedules in June and July, which is when emergency pricing applies. None of that is a reason to accept an unexplained number: ask for the itemized quote above.
How these figures were put together
The "typical range" column is the published range from HomeGuide or Fixr for that item on the date shown; both describe their figures as compiled from contractor estimates nationally, so they are a yardstick, not a Reno quote. The "Reno published price" column is a price a Reno-area company showed on its own website on the read date, and promotional prices are labelled as such. Permit fees are read from the City of Reno fee schedule; the deposit cap and license classes are read from the Nevada statute and code. Nothing on this page is an estimate from Reno Heat & Air, which does not perform or price HVAC work. Figures as of 2026-11-05; the page is re-read at least once a year and whenever the City publishes a new fee schedule each July.
